GDSI Hawaii 1990-1999 I started GDSI Hawaii in 1990 to provide a complete range of GIS services in Hawaii.
In addition to teaching and consulting, GDSI created islandwide tax parcel polygons along with tax assesor data for Hawaii, Maui and Kauai counties.
The State of Hawaii GIS geoportal has current parcel shapefiles for all counties available for free download and use as REST services. Hawaii State GIS Geoportal
As of August 15th 1999, all new projects, services, application development and training moved with me to Esri.
Esri Honolulu Office 1999-2016 Esri opened an office in Honolulu in 1999 to better serve their GIS users in Hawaii and the Pacific.
From August 15,1999 through August 15, 2016, I headed up the Esri office in Honolulu.
"Retirement" I "retired" from Esri in August 2016.
I put "retired" in quotes because I started doing a bit of consulting work as GDSI Hawaii.
I also continued teaching a GIS class at the local community college.
I didn't miss driving in to the office every day, but I did I miss the opportunity I had to share my knowledge and help people find success with maps and GIS.
My colleagues in Redlands made a retirement video that touched me deeply. Yes, that's my mom at the end of the video.
If you'd like to see the video, here's the link.
My colleagues in Hawaii threw a wonderful retirement party for me that was lots of fun, great to see everyone, mostly for the last time.
I made a scrapbook for them (and for me) of some of my memories of working with them - the people who've inspired me and the projects we've worked on.
If you'd like to see the scrapbook, here's the link.
GDSI Hawaii 2016-2024 When I "retired" from Esri in August 2016, the Hawaii State Office of Elections asked if I could continue to support them.
I had been supporting them since 2001 redistricting. They asked if I could continue to support them through 2021 redistricting and the subsequent 2022 election, so I restarted GDSI Hawaii. I saw them through the 2022 election and then began knowledge transfer to consultants at Esri and KNOWiNK who would take over my responsibilities. It took a while but we finished in 2024, so I've now closed GDSI Hawaii.
Archive 1990-2024 As I have time, I plan to create an archive here of the different projects I worked on over the years. I worked on many diverse projects in Hawaii and the Asia/Pacific region. Perhaps you'll find them historically interesting, they were certainly interesting to work on.
